37 years ago today John Barnes gets the ball at the Maracana and says: “Fuck it. I fancy a run at these...”

Of the many ways to slay dragons, Crackbones' is definitely my favorite. "He just tied its neck in a knot, so every time it breathed fired it roasted its own arse." Next time humans come to me breathing fire I know what to do.

I agree. He is a tolerant Twitterer...which beggars belief that he promoted so much intolerance during his days in government.

That's right. He was worth every cent that Zanu-PF paid. His blatant propaganda was prolific, his tight control of media was nothing we had witnessed before and he effectively neutralized the opposition.

Fair analysis. It never occurred to him that ED was evolving as a politician in his own right, and as a contender for the throne he use to guard. A tragic flaw for many a leader in literature and history. So in 2017 Mugabe might have been Julius Caesar saying “Et tu, Brute?”

About leaving any writings, what would be the value of such? The man was a bigot and a narcissist who behaved as if he firmly believed that he was the best thing that ever happened to Zimbabwe. Perhaps we can read his thoughts in his deeds and misdeeds which history has recorded.

Mugabe could have viewed himself as a puppetmaster, living in another unreachable firmament & playing one faction against the other. When the coup was in motion not even a single soul whispered into his ears that his seventh heaven had been breached?

Mugabe captured the military in the 80s-2007. 2008, the military captured him. In 2017, he thought he still captured the military, but he was no longer very sane. Nature had taken its course.

There were vehement denials and profuse apologies after that misadventure, which enhanced Mugabe’s sense of security, and lulled him into complacency that cost him dearly in 2017. Having failed in 2004, ED was not going to lose again in 2014, en route to 2017. His patience paid.

Clearly RGM didn't read the tyrant's survival manual written by Stalin. You don't fire powerful threats. The guys in dark shades knock on their doors at 3am, all of them simultaneously-Quickly followed by public trials at which they are persuaded to confess to national sabotage.

He was a victim of his own Propaganda machinery. Dictators end up having delusions of grandeur and it doesn't help that those henchmen surrounding them are trying to outdo each other in vying for attention from The Leader. History is replete with such examples.

Mugabe was the chief beneficiary, but was in a way also a hostage president if regard is had to its pronouncements in 2002 and 2008. He owed his presidency to them. The Mgagao crew recalled him in 2016. He pushed his luck too far and tried to thwart their ambitions. Bad mistake.
