Worth nothing that AWS does pay Chef and not Confluent, so is this a fair argument? I’d like to see AWS commit to help fund every service and all library dependencies. Is that hard? Yes. Is it right - very yes. @tidelift has some nice ideas though mostly JS ecosystem focused.https://twitter.com/adamhjk/status/1073308736641327105 …

We need Sustainable Free and Open Source Communities. Rather than fretting about business models, and trying to protect revenue at the expense of users freedom, we need to collaborate on the future of our communities social contracts. I don’t know why they decided to pay me (and puppetlabs, and others) but not confluent. If I had to guess, we control the upstream and the brand that is recognized by users. AWS launched a commercial Kafka service, not confluent.

Or they needed to talk to you about stuff and track upstream closer or something? Or maybe just a toss up of the people who led the service rollout being more considerate too (it is, after all, in their interest!)

Larger question of the library ecosystem is important too - how much do we owe to the web frameworks, messaging libs, all the stuff all the way down to Linux

And then it gets unfixable - because those aren’t single entities anymore. The Linux Foundation pays absurd salaries to management, etc.

The philsophical question is then how much of chef and ansible are really chef and ansible...libraries vs assemblages ... turtles all the way down.

I can only speak for myself: I want business models that help build robust communities. I also want people to be paid for their work.
