Upside: Mad thanks to @auchenberg for starting a hard conversation. There's a whole generation of people on the web who have no idea wtf any of this is about. We have failed in educating about the cost of monocultures.pic.twitter.com/TerIC7QkTI

I've been struggling for weeks to find a succinct way to point out that we already tried collaborating on a codebases, and it doesn't work: Apple ended up forking KHTML into WebKit. Google and Apple collaborated on WebKit for years... but then Google decided to fork to Blink.

Correct. It's not tenable for Google to not have control over Chromium. As soon as any meaningful challenge to that control occurs, either another fork or some paradigmatic change will happen. This is basically the story of why Chrome came into being in the first place.

Right. Browser implementations aren't neutral: they're the embodiment of their owners' values and vision for the future of the Web. I have a hard time imagining a shared codebase finding a stable equilibrium with all current vendors. Centralizing on Blink just resets the clock.

An question to me is whether there end up being enough forks among like-minded/frequently partnered groups for them to create a Foundation-supported, multi-vendor fork. MS, Samsung, Sony, etc. Apache & Linux Foundation govern projects at least as big/key/contentious.

It's ancient history at this point, but we almost did this with @ServoDev a few years back - shift the governance to one of the existing foundations, etc. :-)
