Got an overgrown oak savanna? Maybe goats are a restoration tool to consider. These goats rent for $9/day/animal and will clear out multiflora rose, bittersweet, bush honeysuckle, etc.pic.twitter.com/LF9OIlDeup

Call 1800-rent-a-goat! 😂I considered it ina dense cattails patch with many huge rocks dispersed. But the landowners would not have it

This has been the ending line in my last few talks and a paper that is out for review on brush control in tallgrass prairie.

Saw some really discouraging results in Kansas City recently on mature bush honeysuckle. Decided not to move forward with goats. Maybe they didn’t have them dense enough. Wasn’t impressed

Do they remove good natives too? The savanna I am in has few beneficial species and lots of bracken fern.

My guess is that they're fairly generalist, but could still benefit native species under heavily brushed conditions. Not sure about bracken What do you think, @R_C_OConnor?

I’ve been wondering about this for years since first seeing them used to hack back buckthorn. People around here use them for poison ivy but if the roots are left behind (& not further treated) it seems like it will just grow back. Goats + herbicide maybe?

Makes sense to me. I should have asked how goats fit with their full plan, at the site I visited

Prescribed burns is still the best. It turns the nutrients back to the soil and also can help some seeds germinate. Check out the series by Stephen Pyne, he has books about prescribed burns for diff. parts of the country and how it helps each area. Plus my pic is on cover of 1!
