Innocents being convicted is a larger/graver issue. Needs to be addressed urgently. Lack of deterrence can be argued for any punishment. Most arguments here are about inadequacies of criminal justice system in establishing guilt. Different issue from what punishment to award.
I challenge anyone to read this and make a reason-based argument for keeping the death penalty. And don’t forget about the slow death penalty which is life w/out parole. And that has fewer protections than the “death penalty” Many uncovered innocents or people who have redeemed themselves in that pool. Second chances and redemption need to be an option in a humane society

As someone who has personally witnessed this shit show that is capital punishment, it is completely ineffective, expensive, and serves no one. My BFF was murdered by a serial killer in the late 70’s. Multiple trials later he is alive and well to this day. He is white.

Some ppl greatly deserve the dp, but we don’t deserve to be part of a society that imposes it. It appears to empower citizens with revenge; dp gives the State more power over us. The US has 1 of the highest execution rates, & 1 of the highest murder rates, so dp doesn’t deter

To repeat: above was a devil's advocate perspective. It's nihilistic, it's absolutely void of empathy, and ignores the agency of the accused, along with the chance of their innocence. It's only valid from the most base ideation of justice. I hope that no one subscribes to it.
