Definitely been going on for a few years. They use Slides as a kind of multiplayer HyperCard; depositing images on top of text on top of images, a chaotic Photoshop tennis, a real-time meme forge

When I was in middle school in the mid-2000s we would create empty folders in a shared directory on our intranet and rename them to chat with each other.

We used the Windows 98 command "net send" for this. One day I introduced a helper tool for my classmates to enable them to send messages to nicknames instead of ip-addresses. Made things easier
