When we practice speaking, the only feedback we usually get is when we fail to communicate. We only know that that didn't work. We don't really learn anything useful. We need input to continue acquiring language!

When speaking we do trigger some input from whomever we are speaking with, but that tends to be limited to the context we are comfortable with. We don't really expand or scope in the language. Yes, input, continued deliberate input, is the key to our success.

I always thought that speaking to someone who's a native in your target language makes all the difference. Because, when I spoke to my fellow partners in learning, I don't learn that much.
