So little of a word is known when we learn it as a translation. The range of meanings is never the same, plus we still have to learn how the word is used, its connotations, its degree of formality, etc. Better to learn language in context.

Agreed...but if we are teaching lang. in a class, we don’t have time for “naturalistic” acqusition. We need the fastest possible way to establish correct meaning, and that way is generally translation. However, once this is done, no need to keep on trans. same words! ❤️❤️
