Boring TV show? Bye bye. Boring book? Bye bye. The amount of time I spend in contact with the language matches how much fun I'm having when watching/reading it. Discard uninteresting things ruthlessly.

Neckband earphones like these are great: They're my favorite since I can wear them all they long, the battery lasts all day, and I can start listening to the language I'm learning at any time.

If you tried speaking the language you are learning and it was a frustrating experience, I have good news! The more input you get, the easier it will become, and the better native speakers will react. Introverts can learn languages too!

Input is most of the work of learning a foreign language, and you can get input anywhere you are. Don't let the lack of opportunities to speak to be an excuse to keep improving.

Accept what you hear, accept what you read. Be ready to take in what you can understand, what you are ready for, and don't be affraid to let go of what is still out of your reach. You will encounter it again when you are ready for it.

Because research shows background knowledge helps reading compr, there is now talk of increasing subject matter teaching. But studies show that dedicated readers know more about science, history, and literature. Should schools increase hard study or encourage pleasure reading?

When we practice speaking, the only feedback we usually get is when we fail to communicate. We only know that that didn't work. We don't really learn anything useful. We need input to continue acquiring language!
