But people can go on for very long periods of time with minimal sleep and way fewer and less detrimental symptoms than the public might expect (see patients in manic episodes)

In general though I think death by lack of sleep would be like trying to drown yourself in a swimming pool without ‘assistance’. At some point homeostasis or your survival instincts will kick in and win over your... personal willpower??
