many activities related to salaried work take up more mental resources than one would like, including to conform your interests to that of the department/ university. When free, you can diverge your interests more (ie no yearly evaluations by HR of your goals)
Yes. I am particularly interested in the trade-off between writing the paper you are able to write now, and investing time to learn how to write the paper you currently can't.

Learning skills to write that paper you currently can't might lead to new options you didn't foresee, opening more avenues of possibilities. Whereas writing that current paper might limit that option space. Also, learning new skills usually excites more, is more stimulating
