many activities related to salaried work take up more mental resources than one would like, including to conform your interests to that of the department/ university. When free, you can diverge your interests more (ie no yearly evaluations by HR of your goals)

Yes. I am particularly interested in the trade-off between writing the paper you are able to write now, and investing time to learn how to write the paper you currently can't.

No. We are overwhelmed with administrivia. I sometimes think it is intentional, to keep us from reading and thinking too much. If we thought, we might understand what has happened to us and our institution.
