Correct. The process is not logical deduction, but abduction, argument to the best explanation. It is a kind of "guess and check" loop. Deduction is infallible, but abduction can and does make many errors during data gathering and theory refinement.

Abduction just seems like another word for 'hypothesis'. Is there any difference between 'abduction' and 'hypothetico-deduction'?

This is something crucial that we've mostly forgotten in psychology. We teach techniques, but not reflection. We provide no systematic tools for generating creative insights. We fail to consider the additional perspectives gained by studying history and using it to "go meta."

Speculative, hypothetic theories must be verified with empirical experiments, to compare explanation of phenomenon with reality, using proven scientific method. Still doesn't tell you it's whole Theorem, but getting closer. More over, some hypothesis are flawed in beginning.
