This study looks at many countries, but still most are fully-WEIRD or semi-WEIRD (the democracy-D is lacking for e.g. China, but even that country is rather educated/industrialised/rich). The "most non-WEIRD" countries are in Africa and the Middle East, and not in this study.

Regardless of whether the variation is predicted based on those 5 pretty much random concepts, the lack of variation is extremely surprising, on such a topic, no?

Seem to be potentially meaningful differences in footbridge among the Asian countries though, no?
-
This is a good question - if these huge data collections are followed up by studies that actually examine possible differences (given that these are not flukes or artifacts) we might get somewhere. Let's see how often this will happen.

Smaller-than-expected cultural variation is emerging as a consistent theme, it seems. Big surprise for a field of research that began with the presumption such differences would often be large.

Is it more exciting to try to explain wild varistion, or surprising similarity? This might be at least as an interesting challenge! But it is a surprise!

it's an extreme, unrealistic situation - so low variation isn't so surprising or important IMO. The more everyday situation studies (like the lost wallet) had greater external validity & showed higher variation; WEIRD & non-WEIRD contexts *do* behave & think v differently
-
That wallet study was also a good example of a huge N but little insight. It wasn't even clear if the variation was due to people or due to have much work it is to send a letter in a country. What did you learn from that study?

IMHO, we should use detailed demographic terms instead of WEIRD. WEIRD is too vague and unspecific. It's like SES, seems that everyone knows this concept but everyone use different ways to quantify this concept, results in numerous confusion.
