Don’t be surprised that Ukraine is being described as “civilized” as opposed to Iraq and Afghanistan. A reporter once told my class that she covered the Iraq war from the perspective of US soldiers because unlike Iraqis, they weren’t used to war and suffering.

Even Ukraine is described as "relatively" civilized and "relatively" European despite being de facto the biggest country in Europe and when the same was happening in Georgia the outrage was much less powerful because US and most of Europe was busy bombing Iraq. Fuck that.
