It is striking to me that the US government is trying to hire an associate director for a cybersecurity group for about $10k less than Google pays a software engineer with zero years of experience (according to levels.fyi)

US federal government job salaries are uniform across fields and capped by federal law. Part of the reason the government outsources a lot of tech work is that they can’t hire anyone at these salaries but they can pay big bucks for contracts

Uniform across fields seems like a big tactical error to me. In my private sector experience the strategy at huge organizations is more like, hire a firm to do a survey per field & location, pick some n, and offer nth percentile salaries. Seems to work pretty well
