It's not about slavery, it's about state's rights. Any state right in particular? Slavery.
-
I'll go you one better. Southern states argued strenuously against state's rights at the Supreme Court when states like New York recognized the freedom of fugitive slaves in its territory.

A lovely clip I agree, but it's a tad idealistic to claim the north went to war only to free slaves. Baran and Sweezy explain how the war was about the extension of northern capitalist hegemony and wage-labour which are incompatible with a slave economy.
-
Seven treasonous southern legislatures declared they were separate, all of them listing slavery as a reason, and attacked the United States of America, bombarding Fort Sumter. The war came from the slavers, not from the north.

William Tappan Thompson (who said this) https://books.google.com/books?id=vuRCAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA416&dq=%22as+a+people+we+are+fighting+to%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=G5UTVYnsK9O5ogS8p4LIAg&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=%22as%20a%20people%20we%20are%20fighting%20to%22&f=false … was a prominent confederate who pushed for the adoption of the "White Man's Flag" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tappan_Thompson … He may have helped in its creation but he's more known as a proponent for its adoptionhttps://twitter.com/CandaceTX/status/765965442221416448 …

Indeed. A distant relative of mine, Gappa Talmadge Yelverton, signed the Alabama articles of secession. Addressing the secession convention, he said this: "The question of Slavery is the rock upon which the Old Government split: it is the cause of secession."
