I've often heard Christian prayer described to be the emptying of yourself of worldly cares in order to allow the omnipresent divine fill the gaps, which seems similar to Eastern stuff

Prayer =/= meditation. Main line of division: eastern meditation focuses on emptying oneself of everything. Christian meditation calls for a communion with god, whereas prayer is enunciating specific words and ideas meditating is like opening your mind up to god and communing

Think of it like this, it’s like establishing a vector of communication where the medium is the message. The dynamic of the environment of the communication itself is far more important than the message of the prayer.

That makes a lot of sense.
