itll be incredible to watch how trump manages to triangulate against whoever terrible democrat steals the 2020 nomination and comes across as more woke/leftist (again lol) even as he literally presides over these wretched institutionshttps://twitter.com/banditelli/status/972123325659889664 …

dont think that necessarily follows from this, ICE is the centralization of a lot of different agencies after 9/11 into one organization that has a lot of sweeping powers and does a lot of particularly brutal high profile things with a paranoid mandate characteristic of the time

my point is more that liberals will get mired in the wonkish defense of these institutions (that are very unpopular with their base) and trump will actually run circles around this b/c its illustrative of their deference to arbitrary authority and utter lack of creativity

Once again, a pleasantly pragmatic and level headed response. I agree with your innate distrust of such institutions and your analyses of trumps relationship to them, but we need a governmental organ that is capable of stopping the flow of illegal immigrants effectively.

Our school system, welfare system, and healthcare system (not to mention economy) are stretched thin as is. Adding a few million unskilled migrants right before automation hits the fan is truly not a good idea.

I’m amazed that afroamericans aren’t more involved with the immigration debate. The resources allocated towards illegal immigrants are resources that could be allocated towards fixing their communities. Unfortunately I feel black America is firmly entrapped in a political machine

i think yr right re: labor force/automation but not as sure on the rest. & the laws for getting a green card legally are byzantine, difficult, and intrusive as it is, even for net 'productive' foreigners. for ppl w/ nothing to lose that then encourages overstaying visas

when ppl see stories about a quasi-military force aggressively enforcing these laws, larping some kind of military occupation against ppl who are *not that distant* essentially, sending them away to camps, depriving them of due process, ppl are right to be angry about it imo

I think our views on the issue differ fundamentally due to my rightist/nationalist bent. I don’t believe we owe illegal immigrants due process nor any guarantee of humane treatment. That’s the mexican governments problem.

ICE’s militancy should serve as a deterrent to would be illegal immigrants. We should do nothing to incentivize their movement here.

yeah we have a fundamental impasse but i also think that sort of policing is ultimately bad for everyone--normalizing a lot of intrusive surveillance (as with war on drugs/terror) that extends to citizens, that 100-from-border/coast extraconstitutional zone thing comes to mind

Once again I agree, but initiatives such as the ones you describe are legitimatized by the need for stronger border security. If you want less intrusive/militant border policing, then we need to do something that structurally reduces the flow of migrants from Mexico and beyond.
