Harris gives a lawyerly answer to that criticism: "I had clients," so couldn’t speak out. And maybe caution was required for any woman, and a biracial woman in particular, in public life.
But this record haunts her now as she runs for president as a “Progressive prosecutor.” In the era of Black Lives Matter, her record doesn’t look so progressive. The programs she pioneered now look mainstream. And even her supporters tell us she’s a tough prosecutor above all.
So her record raises a couple of questions for her presidential campaign: 1. Most obviously, can a candidate who’s essentially a moderate excite the progressive base?
But harder to answer is 2. Will Dem primary voters decide the party needs a disciplined – the term Harris prefers to “cautious” – candidate in a general election against a famously undisciplined POTUS? Or is her caution a risk when voters seek authenticity?
In California, Kamala Harris' caution seemed to be designed to avoid boxing herself in on any issue. Can this all-things-to-all-people strategy succeed in a crowded Democratic primary?
