I have not said this because I don’t know what to make of it, but am I the only one who thought “female” a weird word anyway? “Woman?” Are we species gendering? It seems so off in ways I can’t fully describe.
I think you’re objecting to a style book issue: female/male is the adjective; woman/man the noun. Not that we love it, either.

Fair point on the grammar lesson. Truly! Maybe if assistant was not the noun. The whole thing is just bizarre. They needed a female assistant.
