Don't underestimate the cultural piece of this. Osaka is Japanese and raised to be self-effacing and retiring. Notice the bowing.

But did the commentator really have to just say Serena was "parenting the crowd" -- "it's a new role for her"? She has a baby and suddenly she's mom to 24,000 spectators?

Nope. He didn’t have to say it. But it was a minor slip. I would guess Serena’s new maternity was at times on just ab everyone’s mind watching that match.
