We must acknowledge the pain caused by lack of opportunity, misplaced priorities and, sometimes, neglect. We must accept that the success stories – the Black reporters/editors who stayed at the LAT or advanced to their next job in journalism – are the exception, not the rule.

I've thought a lot recently about my own career – from my first job
@stocktonrecord where editors took a chance by hiring me out of my internship to the@latimes, where I've been promoted from a reporter to an editor to a department head to managing editor.Show this thread -
I can't say I felt ready for some of those promotions, but the LAT took a chance on me and it gave me mentoring, support and the skills to advance. It's time for me to pay it forward. To look for more reasons to give people the same shots my editors gave me.
