Dr. Boyd is one of our generation's indispensable thinkers, specializing in research about technology and society. 2/15

Like her, I am a graduate of the MIT Media Lab. I have many thoughts about what we've been learning over the past two weeks about the Lab's fundraising and leadership. Unsuprisingly, she expresses everything much better than I can. 3/15

I was not going to post about any of this, because I never post about anything important on social media. But, in this case, that doesn't feel like a good enough excuse to stay quiet. 4/15

I was a student at The Media Lab from 1996-1999. I was extraordinarily lucky to have had that opportunity. It shaped my life from that period on. 5/15

The Lab was a rich and intellectually diverse place. Faculty and students were, in ways almost completely unique for that time, pushing on the boundaries of what could be done with computers and computation. 6/15

Also, many of the luminaries of our small world regularly behaved in ways that made women uncomfortable. 7/15

Many people, both students and faculty, were open about assuming that women should always have to prove their tech bona fides. 8/15

None of this makes the Media Lab different from the tech industry more generally. Our whole industry is now -- should now -- be facing what Dr. Boyd refers to as a Great Reckoning. 9/15
