Confused over the recent Elon backlash, in all facets. Most stories coming out about him end up being proven false. His sub was revealed to always be a back-up plan that (luckily) wasn't needed. The rescuer completely mischaracterized his idea. What's the problem?

Who else is publicly using their resources, brain, and time to try and solve giant complex problems? Fossil fuel dependent cars, congestion, rail ways, Flint's water (hopefully), etc. Sometimes it doesn't work out as you hope. But why damn him for trying?
-
I for one am happy that some billionaire is actually trying to help the world rather than hurt it.
-
The problem is that he's trying to paint himself as some sort of Messiah while having generally the same mindset as any other tech boy in San Fran. Aka solving problems in the most flashy, "new-tech" way possible and thinking themselves as the "hot stuff".
-
Which shows in the way he attempted to solve the Thai crisis ("sub made from the rocket parts - exciting!") and the way he attempted to solve the Flint crisis ("a filter in every* house - Musk's names all over the front page!").
-
I am playing devil's advocate here, but is giving a filter to every house still not a giant public good? Again, whether or not that is the ultimate solution, why would we publicly mock someone for saying they'll make sure everyone in Flint has a filter?
-
1. Notice the asterisk next to "every". It's a bit more complicated than that. Long story short, Musk wants to run water tests on every house and determine if they "deserve" to get a filter.
-
2. Installing a filter in every house looks like a public good, but remember, those filters need servicing. The actual filter part must be replaced regularly. How much money would the families need to dump into those filters afterwards? Who knows.

Any person who will spend billions of dollars so a select few can get off this planet instead of using his wealth to help keep this planet and it's people well, was already a douche. This is just evidence after the fact.

I mean, be angry about this but you can’t deny he also builds giant corporations that work around using renewable energy. In SA he gave us a free battery to run because we kept having blackouts. - he’s not just CEO of SpaceX.

It was not free at all http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-30/sa-tesla-battery-begins-producing-power-a-day-ahead-of-schedule/9212794 … South Australian taxpayers will be subsidising its operation with up to $50 million over the next 10 years.

Why spoil it? Let them be in their fairyland until it all collapses one day.

For others, like me, who hadn't followed this here's the despicable comment referenced and more:https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/nation-now/2018/07/15/elon-musk-thai-cave-rescue-diver-pedophile-twitter/786527002/ …

Thanks for the info

My pleasure. It sounded so unlikely that we'd never believe it, if we didn't see it!

You're right. I'm careful about anything I can't verify.
