I think it's more about having a reverence of books as potential (depending on the book) founts of culture and learning. Also, books used to be very expensive, so culturally we protect them for others to share.

Having grown up in a bookless household, I have too much respect for them to damage them - all the books I read were second-hand. The 'underliners' are a malign and nefarious breed!

Because damaging something that I spent hard earned money on seems both disrespectful and wasteful. Are you so clumsy and messy that you can't read and keep your book in fairly good condition?
-
This is about people who are horrified at how others treat their own possessions. I spend my hard earned money on a book because I want to consume the content. Not sure how anything other than not reading it could be “wasteful”.

Why are people so precious about the cars they buy? dent the bumper, scratch the audi, crack the windshield who cares as long as you're driving. swear to god people care more about the satisfaction of others seeing their cars in the driveway than actually driving them.
-
My car exists to get me from point A to point B, not to look pretty. At least twice my car's been hit and I told the other driver "don't worry about it" because the damage was only cosmetic. On the other hand, I would never tear a book in half, though I do write in them.

This statement physically hurts. I love books to much to hurt them. I literally cringe when I see some one break the spine of a book. I like them fractionally less for having done it....

I guess I just love to read so much that forming an emotional bond with inanimate stacks of papers never occurred to me. I buy a used book, slice it up, and put it in my back pocket to read whenever I have a minute. It's great, I'm in constant wonder

If it doesn't affect its designed purpose and makes it more portable, yep.
