I’m pretty sure that Sammy Kershaw’s “Queen of My Double Wide Trailer” was written because someone realised that “trailer” sounds like “trail her,” and I’m here for it. How’s your Friday going?

Now she is DMing a story for me and her mom. Making us roll dice and telling us what happens.

GM’d my 5yo daughter’s first . She played a magical OC & her mom played Goofy & Cookie Monster. They were delivering a letter to Elsa from Anna, got derailed by a rock throwing giant, & agreed to help some trolls. 30 minutes of attention & interaction. :)

Sometimes, I wonder what would be like if it hadn’t evolve out of a tabletop war game. I suspect it would look a bit more like Dungeon World.

If you’re running a tabletop RPG game in any system, relax & let the players interact with the world. In the words of Miss Frizzle, let your players take chances, make mistakes, get messy. If they wreck your plans, no one else knows. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Discovering that I didn’t have to plan everything out to a T, and more importantly that my players didn’t have to follow what I planned, was a massive relief. Players don’t even know what you have written. Most of my players have no clue what was ad-libbed and what was planned.

This is a trap that I see a lot of newer DMs fall into: you spend hours crafting the perfect scene or battle, then your players decide not to follow your well-crafted plan or story. You get frustrated and your players feel it, too.

Tabletop RPG DMs, don’t plan an encounter/puzzle/etc w/ only 1 solution. Anything forcing your players into specific thought patterns will just frustrate you & them. Instead, create a stressful/exciting situation & roll w/ the way your players solve it.

If you’re hiring developers, please consider NOT using live coding sessions or dev “tests.” I’ve written software used on millions of sites and made products that have brought in millions of $ in revenue. I would probably fail your hiring process if it had live coding or tests.

How’s the quarantine going in Tennessee? I live across from a children’s park, and it’s full of people. There’s also a shaved ice truck. At least we will be cool spreading this virus around.

In responding to him by yelling and getting angry, I lost control. As someone who is overly introspective at times, it’s difficult to allow myself to move forward. I can’t control his abusivness, but I can control my response to it, and, as an adult, how often I’m around it.

Tonight I lashed out at my dad, who was drunk, & I feel really bad about it. Not just because of what I said; I allowed him to make me angry enough to respond. Attempted to apologise for letting anger control me; no response. Trying to find room to forgive myself & grow.

Surprising how much growing up with an alcoholic father prepared me for how quickly my 5yo goes from unquenchable rage to ethereal happiness.
