How can you prove that you're a US citizen? Your birth certificate? Your voter registration card? Your military ID? Your social security number? Here's what I learned: none of that is enough any more.

You left out one class of people: adoptees. Since about the 1940s, when a child’s adoption is finalized, their birth certificate gets rewritten w/ the adoptive parents’ names where the biology parents’ names once were. The original is sealed away from even the adoptee themselves.
-
The amended birth certificate becomes your legal identification. The original birth certificate is no longer recognized as valid in any way and in all but a handful of states, adoptees are legally prohibited from obtaining those documents about ourselves.
-
The amended birth certificate is issued AFTER the adoption is finalized. If the court finalized your adoption after you were a year old, your amended birth certificate will have an issue date reflecting that.
-
Per the
@StateDept’s passport requirements updated in 2011, if your birth certificate was issued more than one year after your birth—which is common for adopted people—you must other prove you’re a U.S. citizen, whether you were born here or not. -
Many of us have run into big issues bc the
@StateDept has astoundingly limited knowledge of how adoptees’ amended birth certificates work. We’ve been asked to produce our original birth certificates, which we can’t if we live in a state that blocks our access to our own records. -
It’s a long-running injustice.

Thank you for this explanation.

You can see what Trump authorizes for veterans he finds undesirable over and over and over again. From the Khans, to Senator McCain, to the homeless vets he had moved from in front of his building as a NYer. Trump doesn't support veterans. He supports HIS veterans.
-
He doesn’t have a sense of camaraderie team work being in battle. How can he possibly care about vets. 45 has no honor or trustworthiness. Sad some vets support a draft dodger maybe they are like him morally. Person first before career.
-
It is really sad. Esp bc vets know bs when we smell it. The attachment to Trump is tribal at this point. They are dug in. Won't admit he's a mess. Or they like what he is doing bc they think it benefits them to have him there "taking the country back" from "demographic changes."
-
I think the vets that embrace him holds the same values as him. A vet was a regular person before the military.
-
But he has no values.
-
And no soul but he does have bone spurs

This made me smile despite this awful news

Every smile counts.

@BetoORourke@texasdemocrats ...perhaps you can use this and make sure Latinos know what’s at stake? Not negative/scare tactics- this is real. -
POC already know what is at stake. POC voted for Hillary. They were betrayed by the majority. The GOP has been on this track for decades. Arpaio is but one instance. The majority kept voting Republican. Putin saw an in.
-
I recall the post mordem eval the GOP did after their last big loss. They found that they would need to stop their white nationalist agenda and become more inclusive, lose the border rhetoric. Somehow they found a way to double down on it and still win (dark money and Russia).
-
They weren't genuine, though. The Bushes have a diverse family. But if you look at attendees to the Republican conventions...all white. Check out Democratic Conventions...everyone. Additionally, all the talk of morals was crock. It was used to smear, criticize and Hammer others.
-
That’s all true. I just expected them to do a more effective job of keeping their real agenda hidden behind the guise of tax breaks and conservative values in 2016. It’s probably good that the true colors of most of the GOP is exposed. I hope this leads to its extinction.
-
Yes! Me too. But a lot of folks want to blame Trump and not the entire GOP. They were bad for four decades. Ronald Reagan committed Treason by undercutting a deal Jimmy Carter had with Iran to release the hostages. Hence, Iran Contra was the follow up to the first crime.
-
People forget that Reagan made a back door deal with the Iranians to delay release of the hostages until after the 1980 election. As President Reagan then turned around and illegally sold weapons to Iran, and used the money to illegally fund the murderer Contras in Nicaragua.
-
I haven't forgotten. It felt like I was watching a parallel universe with folks praising a man who had more folks indicted than in any other admin. Crazy shit. Naming airports and everything after Iran Contra. Drugs and guns flooded the US, too.
