The problem we have now within movements that are critical of their governments is that they go one further by identifying their country as the government. This is wrong. The country is the people who make it, not the power controlling them. Sadly this has all been conflated.

To add / disclaimer: I loathe the British government, the establishment, etc, but I love our people and what we have here (despite it being very dysfunctional). And by “our people” I mean anyone from anywhere who lives here and doesn’t want make life worse for others.

It's only one political party. I don't hear any Republicans idolizing tyrannical dictators.

Our dictators in their graves are smiling as they read the first part of this tweet. Criticizing a government does not mean self-loathing. That’s an authoritarian notion.
-

As a Frenchman I hope I would, for ex., have been VERY critical of French policies in Algeria back in the 50s/60s. Not because I "loathe" my country, but because I LOVE it & therefore really LOATHE when French leaders implement inhuman, illegal, immoral policies in my name
