Pour just a bit of hot water over the grounds to wet them initially, stir, and let it “bloom” for like less than a minute. Then add the full amount of hot water to brew/plunge.

Tbh after several years of failed attempts to brew a decent cup from my French press, I switched over to a stovetop espresso maker and it has been so much better.
