Just a thought: A bunch of professional journalists trashing student journalists isn’t productive, regardless of how concerning the paper’s argument may be. There are teaching AND learning moments, and I’m sure we all had them, maybe before Twitter allowed them to spread.

Agreed generally. But a Twitter pile on — without actually talking to the students — isn’t the only form of calling out.
Exactly. Yes, public criticism is part of journalism. Everyone who comes in to the business needs to get used to it. But I hope some people (likely the paper’s alums) are doing direct outreach to the students too with advice.

I’ve now re-read - twice - the editorial and I worry that legitimate criticism is being confused with bullying. Not from you two, but in other places. The actions of the student paper should worry every single working journalist. And the whole of the Medill school faculty.

Yes, we should support & encourage & sympathize with these kids. They’re just starting & hopefully they learn a valuable lesson. But we can also be alarmed. They bowed down to peer pressure & sold out their staff. It’s more than a mistake. If I work there, I probably quit.
