At we have a sliding scale for registration where students pay $80 at the low end and industry people pay over $1100. This has worked out pretty well so far, and we have also been able to provide grants for free registration.

75 years ago today, the concentration camp in Auschwitz was liberated. This serves as a reminder that democracies can fail and fall. And that ordinary people can turn into monsters, given clever propaganda and permission. Stay vigilant to make sure this doesn't happen again!

I’m thankful for all of the men in my life who have enough self-confidence to cheer for me in my success rather than be threatened by it.

Another data point, based on parsing 6M public notebooks on GH: We do not report on Dask in the paper. But a quick check by Fotis reveals: 6899 notebooks by 1995 users on GH imported Dask.

"How many people use your OSS project?" This is a critical question for funding OSS, and is also really hard to answer well. This blogpost is my attempt to answer it honestly for Dask.

What happens if you give a genie three wishes that are each satisfiable alone, but unsatisfiable together? Does the genie return an unsat core? Grant only some of the wishes? If so, which ones? Does this differ by genie?

“What evidence *would* convince you? What would you have to see, or hear, or know?” Beautiful and insightful thread from on the magical question to ask when having dialogue with people whose views are different from ours.

I think I learned at least one important thing this year, & I’d like to share it. I was reminded of it last night. (THREAD) My family came to visit me. I love them dearly. I tried to avoid it, but ended up in an intense discussion of politics, racism, sexism, & classism. (1/n)

Block bigots and move on, or else subtweet them, don't quote them. At best you're helping them spread their message to your followers. At worst, you're helping train the recommendation systems to elevate bigotry in general by showing that it increases engagement metrics.

I have stopped reviewing any non open access journal. I wonder if it's time for academics to boycott serving on any program committees whose proceedings are not open access. It's clear isn't listening to *their* key stakeholders. cc

Dear -- as a longtime ACM member, this decision doesn't make sense to me in so many ways. Please invest some time in listening to your membership.

A year ago today, we were almost out of money. We had a consulting client who owed us ~$450k, but was trying to negotiate down on the amount, despite work being fully delivered in September. Then, "the holidays" hit. 1/

Kindness always wins. There are certainly moments in my life when I question this truth, but those are just a reminder that I need to refocus on my definition of “winning.” The only “win” that I want in my life is the one that is achieved while being kind to others.

Microsoft Research came up with an A.I. model to predict the number of bugs in a code base and the top predictors in order of accuracy were - company org structure - code churn - code complexity - dependencies - code coverage Anyone else not surprised?
