When I entered academic job market, I was pregnant w/my 1st. Had 5 campus interviews near due date & told the only female search committee chair of the bunch know. She cancelled my visit & I never heard from them again. I think about this a lot serving as search committee chair.

Forgiveness has its reasons: People are more willing to forgive transgressors whom they perceive to have value as relationship partners going forward. New work from Adam Smith, Yohsuke Ohtsubo, many others, & yrs truly.

Great article by Allen Frances. "NIMH and NIDA should stop seeing themselves as narrowly focused brain institutes and widen their research agendas to projects that might actually help people, not just advance scientific knowledge."

Sometimes when I read a scientific article trying to explain art, it's like seeing a guy at the beach wearing tennis shoes and a cell phone clip on his belt. There's nothing *wrong* per se.... but that guy just doesn't *get* it.

This article on our 'real fake' or 'fake real' social media selves makes me want to delete all my accounts. But drats, I need Twitter to find and share interesting articles. Alas, we're all trapped on this virtual reality hamster wheel of likes and shares.

I'm no fan of Freud here. Much psychoanalytic theory is either wrong or untestable. But much of it also metaphorical and perhaps misunderstood by hardnosed empiricists.

That publishing more is inherently better (might be better for landing a job or promotion, but nec better for science)

this largely in response to growing up in a local culture where happiness was treated as the only acceptable emotion to display

People sometimes wonder why I'm drawn to dark topics like suicide, and until recently I wasn't really sure. But it occurred to me that I guess my point all along has been to say that happiness isn't better than anger or sadness, and you never owe anyone a smile you don't mean.
