    I’m published again! Yay! Did you know bacteria like to build houses in your body? (This is actually what plaque on your teeth is!). These houses are essentially nets that the bacteria make to surround themselves for protection/food sharing/etc.

    I had a massage yesterday and the guy spent most of the time telling me all ab the benefits of working out. I didn’t say anything about not working out/offered no information about my workout routine. He just assumed I didn’t, I guess? WTF. Anyway. Still thinking about that.

    Today in my Skype a Scientist session a girl asked me a hard hitting question: what do you do with your hair when you go in the ocean. Idk if y'all realize this, but these are real concerns. The simple answer I gave was: I put it in a pony tail, but it's so much more complex 1/9

    These are pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are an opportunistic human pathogen, meaning they infect people who are already sick. It’s a big problem in hospitals and for folks w/ . Anything we can use to make current treatments/host immune system more effective is BIG.

    In the zoomed in image you can see the net and bacteria pretty clearly, and on the zoomed out image, you can see that these structures can actually get quite large (100s of micrometers!) and span over huge lengths compared to the size of a lil bacteria (~1 micrometer) 😱.

    I’m excited because look at these cool images I got of bacteria embedded in the nets that THEY THEMSELVES actually made! The bacteria are the lil cylindrical rods and the nets are those strings between them. The nets are actually a web of sugar!

    And I spent a lot of time testing different solutions to essentially “dissolve” the bacterial nets with the hope that then your immune system can break through and kill bacteria more effectively.

    I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.
