how expensive is it to scale the sprites in/out instead of popping them?

Interesting idea.. I took scaling out to save tokens & cpu but maybe it's worth re-adding that.

I thought pico8 was meant to be retro, yet I see voxels. How fast is pico8? What is the pico8's clock speed?

No voxels here, just flat shaded polys. Dunno about the rest - it has to run on Raspberry Pi & PocketCHIP so not much for sure :)
