today i realized it has been completely 100% ok to set a float pref to any string at all because float prefs are treated as strings, and you absolutely will break things if you do this

For more fun: for prefs without default values, users can (and, inevitably, do!) set them to values of a different type altogether. Returns NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED if code tries to read the value (or the optional default, if the caller passed one).
