something like state monad？
IMO lot of miscommunication happens about the utility of mutability vs. purity in software engineering. One of the biggest red herrings is that, in local context (where you can fully see the state), state isn't really bad, sometimes helps--tail-recursive loops *are* for loops.

yeah, but I think it's even more like this: in certain cases the state monad just collapses to a truly imperative program in the traditional sense. But I'm actually not sure how often this happens, I wonder if GHC actually tail-call optimizes small uses of the state monad.
