hear, hear.. I do wish there was an environmentally-friendly way to fly, though. This seems like one area in which we are deeply dependent on fossil fuels (vs. say, trains)

would be awesome if so. As with any big legislation I'm skeptical, and I worry that if it actually got passed it'd be greatly reduced to the point where the essentially useful things (like this) would get stripped out and it would just turn into "make more lanes people"
Cross-country rail is a good long term goal to replace flight as the primary long distance travel. But also, zeppelins. IMO zeppelins are the flight of the future, because they can be built carbon neutral.
"But zeppelins blow up" yes and planes malfunction and explode as well. The difference between one sardine tin and another is that zeppelins can be more environmentally friendly. Also they've got Style.
The good news is flying only accounts for 3% or so of co2 emissions, IIUC. So we could theoretically use synthetic fuel for a long time as long as we stop being so ridiculously fucking wasteful elsewhere.
