Houdini's paint worklet will run off-main-thread by default in Chrome 81. To say it another way: JavaScript-driven canvas & animations that don't use up your main thread budget 🤯🤯🤯

Text fragments will soon be available in Chromium land. You can then use `#:~:text=` to highlight certain text. 😲 🔗 Chrome status: 🔗 Spec: Video alt: Usage of text fragments to highlight text on wikipedia

published a major release of the GLTFJSX tool that i made last year: it turns files into re-usable react threejs components that are easy to modify and customize! the comfort you get from this is close to a scene editor, but in a real prod env.

Given that Firefox (and Safari?) blocks most JS analytics by default, has anyone tried to untangle that from the (mostly JS based) usage stats? I just have a nagging feeling that the huge proportion of Chrome usage might be over-reported.

the one of the worst parts of this is that ’s tag line is “The smartest way to screen toxic workplace behavior.” i dunno about you, but snitching on potential employees’ twitter *likes* that mention alcohol or the word “fuck” seems like toxic workplace behavior to me

✍️Line Lengths (and CSS Length Units) Reflecting on what I learned from a day of surprisingly enthusiastic responses on picking the right CSS Unit for a site's line length. People don't know the `ch` length exists!!

Browsers can animate at least 4 things cheaply: position, scale, rotation & opacity. is still useful for checking if CSS triggers re-layouts or reflows.

I dont usually care about these stuff but this shows a very detailed understanding of what and why the conponents in question were being built. It is refreshing knowing there are folks out there who care about what they build.

I stumbled upon a technique for generating fluid charts that don't require JavaScript. It seems to work pretty well

Instant feedback during typing can be helpful sometimes (e.g. checking validity of a username shouldn't require the user to blur the field or resubmit the form). HOWEVER, make sure feedback is w/ aria-describedby and aria-live="polite" Example code:

Sometimes my kid wails that he needs help with Legos. My inclination was to consult on structure, add pieces. This always made him cry. I finally figured out that the "help" he needs is for me to sit quietly next to him while he figures it out. And isn't that what we all want?

Being able to clearly and concisely communicate an idea, and tailor your message to a variety of audiences is a core skill for most engineers. But being able to use writing and presentation skills to tell stories and persuade audiences is where the real magic happens.
