This is how a potential #MH370 impact signal looks across the IO. Works out to 40.165S 83.795E with <10sec residuals pic.twitter.com/UYILZHKdFa

@kprostyakov #MH370 My predicted location only 13 NM away from your acoustic estimate of noise event location. Both are exactly on 7th arc.

@DrBobbyUlich I pickd 5 sts with obvious single candidate for time window ~40s84e and re-calculated center, then picked others, rinse repeat

@kprostyakov How wide was time window that you used to pick events for best 5 stations? Are locations of stations easy to find online?

@DrBobbyUlich locations can be had from IRIS site, my timings are here with coords: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tgb0k4x9WOTyWYXI6U1TUZA5MGyXUhM1Z_Wk-1IjEM4/edit?usp=sharing …

@kprostyakov Using 1.46 moves times earlier by ~8 s for AIS and ~20 s for distant stations. The residuals might go lower if u fit speed.

@DrBobbyUlich speed is tricky to fit, as effective speed is different for all sts (both due to path in ocean and in ground after T->P conv)

@kprostyakov 2/2 Then we could probably calibrate relative timing down to a couple of seconds and locate within 1-3NM!!!

@DrBobbyUlich very true, and has been done many times by navy

@kprostyakov Kirill, do you plan to create a colorized "sum sq. residuals" map like you did before?

    2. Kirill Prostyakov ‏@kprostyakov 16 Mar 2015

@DrBobbyUlich sure, I need to make a few sub-10sec adjustments based on horizontal comps. I'll make a map and pdfs of picks for a writeup

@kprostyakov Are you forcing sound speed constant for all stations? What value are you finding? Must be very close to 1.46.

    5. Kirill Prostyakov ‏@kprostyakov 16 Mar 2015

@DrBobbyUlich used 1.47 km/sec. Although from what I've read it can be in the range 1.46..1.49 for different sts, based on latitude.

@kprostyakov Have u tried fitting speed? Might reduce residuals if stations vary in range. Can fit lat, lon, time, and average speed.

@kprostyakov New pos is right on 7th arc. Did you force solution to be on arc or was any lat/lon nearby possible?

    2. Kirill Prostyakov ‏@kprostyakov 16 Mar 2015

@DrBobbyUlich no, did not force, search within 40s84e+-5 deg. first iteration only with 5 stronger sts gave center at 40.147, 83.83

@lucybarnes_ just exploring what the data have to offer, all this is not cast in stone. The whole area needs to be checked for fit to data

@kprostyakov As u are seismic expert:kinetic energy of 777 impact on water is really enough to be picked up by geophones for seismic events?

    2. Kirill Prostyakov ‏@kprostyakov 2 Apr 2015

      @gerry_vienna ~1e5 kg x (1e4) (m/s)^2 = 1e9 J impact energy ~ 1e2 kg TNT equiv. T wav from sim charges were routinely seen across the globe

@kprostyakov @DrBobbyUlich Is it possible to calculate the type of acoustic event that would be needed to support this result?
