    Delta’s chief medical officer says the airline’s vaccine clinic has seen 5x more people coming in for their first doses today, the day after the airline announced a $200 monthly health insurance surcharge for unvaxed employees.

    There are rare exceptions, but these miles/cash split payment methods are almost always a phenomenally awful deal for flyers. Delta’s Miles + Cash has been around for years, and it’s almost never worth considering. It’s a veneer of flexibility to cover up poor value.

    Frequent flyer programs have become a lot less important to me during the pandemic. But if I still played the game, I’m not sure how I’d feel about this. is introducing a money + miles option. Are these ever a good deal? From an internal communique:

    To those asking if Delta's move violates ACA, apparently not.

    Delta Airlines will charge unvaccinated employees $200 per month extra for their health benefits. But, they are not mandating vaccination. While insurers are prohibited from charging higher premiums to unvaccinated people, employers themselves can.

    Yes, I noticed Delta Air Lines refused to call it the Delta variant. They never do. Yes, it's always funny (in a sad way).

    Delta's CEO defends the $200 monthly surcharge for unvaccinated workers as necessary to cover costs of hospitalization, which he says costs Delta $40k/case. "Since the rise of the B.1.617.2 variant, all Delta employees ... hospitalized with COVID were not fully vaccinated."

    This falls short of matching United's outright vaccination mandate which takes effect late next month ... but Delta doesn't have as far to go. According to the same memo from CEO Ed Bastian, 75% of Delta employees are already fully vaccinated.

    After months of climbing steadily, air travel is clearly on the downswing: Less than 1.5 million travelers in the U.S. yesterday - the lowest in three months, per data. Summer travel season is over, but is the Delta variant dragging travel down now too?

    About time. Currently, this would only be for flights to countries that require proof of vaccination, not some kind of overarching air travel vaccination mandate. But Delta's CEO hasn't closed that door once vaccines receive FDA authorization ... like today.
