“Just behind me is North Korea”: Taking a hike along the DMZ My video report from the inter-Korean border for Al Jazeera:
Quote Tweet
These are no ordinary hikes in the countryside. South Korea has just opened 11 trails along the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone, offering a rare and unique glimpse across the border into the North ⬇️

Seoul City, under openly homophobic mayor Oh Se-hoon, said the decision was made based on a bylaw that an event designed for children's well-being is given priority when multiple applications overlapped on the same date. It's a hijack event, nothing more.

There is no shortage of fear mongering, disinformation, and discrimination against social minorities on CTS. The channel spews hate.

Meanwhile, S. Korea's #1 fanatic Christian channel CTS continues to spew fake news, says there are concerns that if an anti-discrimination law is enacted like other countries, "homosexual advocacy education" will make the number of "homosexuals and sex changes in teens" shoot up. twitter.com/koryodynasty/s…

For years I've been documenting how CTS has been mounting a homophobic nationwide campaign against LGBTQ. It's literally part of their agenda. They also broadcast relentless messaging against the anti-discrimination law.
Quote Tweet
"In 2015, CTS also ran the 'STOP HOMOSEXUALITY' campaign to inform citizens on the harmful effects and severity of homosexuality, continuing to report on the reality of gay advocacy that is spreading around the world and the harmful effects caused by it."

I think it's important to note that the Christian organisers behind the event blocking Seoul Pride is no ordinary company or coincidence. It's a deliberate attempt to hijack pride. CTS is a broadcaster famous for spreading hate, fear, and discrimination about LGBTQ and pride.

Just unbelievable and disgusting. Seoul City has *REFUSED* to allow Seoul Pride to use Seoul Plaza on July 1 as organisers had planned, giving priority to a homophobic conservative K-Christian event instead. Not joking. Welcome to 2023 "Seoul, My Soul" everyone. twitter.com/sqpexe/status/…

Every year, Seoul Pride has to go through this ritual of having to prove why they should be allowed. Every time they need to disprove the fake news from the K-Christians who say pride = porn. Or be first to apply for access.
Quote Tweet
Make or break: this seat determines the fate of Seoul Queer Culture Festival aka Seoul Pride 2019. Rally permission only given 30 days in advance by police, meaning organisers and volunteers must guard first seat in line at all costs to apply on May 2 before homophobic groups do.

Literally EVERY year, Seoul City needs to "deliberate" over whether to allow Seoul Pride access to Seoul Plaza. The K-Christian lobby group claim Seoul Pride is obscene and pornographic and corrupts children into becoming gay and get HIV.
Quote Tweet
Update: Seoul City has responded to Seoul Pride's demand to accept report to use Seoul Plaza - which Seoul has refused to do ie: blocking #pride event. Says report was sent "before Covid restrictions were lifted", also needs to deliberate whether event violates purpose of plaza. twitter.com/seoulmania/sta…

While South Korea boasts one of the highest levels of press freedom in Asia according to this year's RSF press freedom index, the country's ranking has to no surprise also taken a hit since last year, especially in the political context.

In 2021, South Korea recorded the highest suicide rate among OECD countries. There's no shortage of daily headlines about people -- including schoolchildren -- making “extreme choices,” a euphemism for ending one’s life. Important story by :

7/ Like I said, while it is true that the K-pop industry places high demands on its performers, it is not the only industry that does so, nor is it the only factor contributing to the suicide crisis in Korea.

6/ It's orientalism to sensationalise the link between suicide and K-pop. It's a complex issue that requires an understanding of the larger societal pressures at play. I understand such headlines are guaranteed to generate clicks.

4/ Additionally, elderly people in Korea are also facing high rates of suicide due to loneliness and isolation. This is a societal issue that requires a lot more attention, not just finger-pointing at the K-pop industry.

3/ We need to acknowledge that the hyper-competitive society in S. Korea is a breeding ground for mental health issues. This affects not just K-pop stars, but youths from all backgrounds who face immense pressure to succeed at school and in their careers.

2/ The K-pop industry is just one manifestation of such pressures, which include intense training schedules, long working hours, lack of privacy and personal time, strict diets, and high expectations for physical appearance and performance. This can take a toll on mental health.

1/ I'm honestly a little tired of constantly being asked to comment on the link between suicide and K-pop. Not a K-pop or mental health expert, but the suicide crisis in Korea is one that affects all backgrounds and generations. Not just K-pop. A small thread:

South Korea has the highest suicide rate in the developed world. In 2021, suicide was the main cause of death in ages 10 - 39. Mental illness has been identified as the leading cause. It’s been a problem for decades - not tackled by successive govts. Read this 👇

My latest for the Guardian on South Korea's mental health crisis. While glittering on the surface, suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 10 to 39. It's time to prioritise people's well-being and break the cycle of competition and conformity.

A major bridge in Seoul, Jamsu Bridge, will be entirely closed off for 24 hours on Saturday to host Louis Vuitton's pre-fall show. That's quite an undertaking.
