So excited Times Higher Education reviewed my book! "This is a brilliant book, which uses a well-researched historical study as the context for a discussion of the international order of the present." via

Good to know the lesson of the Austin nomination that GOFOs like Blair are absorbing is that civilians should do less whining about civilian control of the military.

This is exactly the kind of assumption of military superiority over the rest of American society that restrictions on recently retired officers serving is designed to prevent.

In my memory....Eisenhower had an option of drawing five star military retirement pay .... or pay as the President. He chose the military pay.

You may be surprised to know that I'm sending a Christmas note to the Chinese Ambassador in London. Please do the same in your country -- and include a card, and a message asking that it be forwarded to Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.

Will a retired general as SecDef cause that breakdown? Almost certainly not, at least not in the short-term. But the norms and laws we ignore today change our society and its choices in the future. Jealously guarding these values and traditions is essential. 2/2

Why is civilian control important? Because if our nation were facing the threats to its legitimacy it is now, and a person or party commanded the loyalty of the military, our situation would be truly dire. But they don't, and it isn't. Even if we face serious challenges. 1/2

Awright, awright 🙂 Best since 1947: Cheney, Perry, Laird. Worst since 1947: McNamara, Marshall, Rumsfeld.

Inability to lead a large organization, blaming the UN after our failure in Somalia, command climate. But his memo to Clinton after DADT about how civilians gain military support is brilliant -- he understood, just couldn't do it.

Yep. Brilliant CSA, great SecState, poor SecDef: supported MacArthur crossing the 38th parallel (didn't anticipate China's intervention), didn't manage MacArthur well, left Truman to be the bad guy.

Crowded category, barely edged out by Aspin. Upon reconsideration, I could easily support.

I differ strongly with my friend on this, think it will further politicize the military not to have GEN Milley serve out his statutory term. via

Powerful thread about handling harassment cases. I especially appreciate @bengriffino6's thoughts about how it could have been handled even better (h/t )

"Those of us in free societies shouldn't lose confidence that we have the ability to conquer these challenges," says. We can use the tools of free societies to push those who would corrupt them out of our civic space.

China is proposing a different kind of international order in which the government can impose its will on people, explains. But democracies are resilient and can outcompete this system.
