    Good to know the lesson of the Austin nomination that GOFOs like Blair are absorbing is that civilians should do less whining about civilian control of the military.

    In my memory....Eisenhower had an option of drawing five star military retirement pay .... or pay as the President. He chose the military pay.

    Will a retired general as SecDef cause that breakdown? Almost certainly not, at least not in the short-term. But the norms and laws we ignore today change our society and its choices in the future. Jealously guarding these values and traditions is essential. 2/2

    Why is civilian control important? Because if our nation were facing the threats to its legitimacy it is now, and a person or party commanded the loyalty of the military, our situation would be truly dire. But they don't, and it isn't. Even if we face serious challenges. 1/2

    Kori did. I would normally vote no, because I think, like Neustadt, the job is fundamentally different after 1932, and then again after 1945. But Kori can because she's Kori.

    Inability to lead a large organization, blaming the UN after our failure in Somalia, command climate. But his memo to Clinton after DADT about how civilians gain military support is brilliant -- he understood, just couldn't do it.

    Yep. Brilliant CSA, great SecState, poor SecDef: supported MacArthur crossing the 38th parallel (didn't anticipate China's intervention), didn't manage MacArthur well, left Truman to be the bad guy.

    Powerful thread about handling harassment cases. I especially appreciate @bengriffino6's thoughts about how it could have been handled even better (h/t )

    I took command of a company at Ft Hood almost 8 years ago. My very first day, literally just after I cut the cake, my BN CDR asked me to come see him. He handed me an investigation into a hostile workplace environment that was just completed on one of my new platoons.
