Frankly, in the case of Ahmad Dhani, I have to admit that I'm quite happy that the Indonesian state is doing a version of "punch the NAZI" on my behalf. Fully aware of all the perversions that it entails, seeing that smug shitface behind bars gives me satisfaction.

I also happen to subscribe to the opinion that Ahmad Dhani's speech falls outside of protected speech. So in that regard, I see no problem in terms of free speech protection.

What concerns me is the law itself, the fact that it exists and the way it is articulated—vague enough to allow for mob justice (e.g. wtf is "meresahkan masyarakat"?) and arbitrary harassment of political opponents.

What needs to be done is to make the law more precise in how it stipulates the specific crimes, particularly hate crime, which should be grounded on the principle of non-discrimination and rights, not public order. This is not at all a difficult thing to articulate.

Particular emphasis should be given to protecting the rights of minorities and vulnerable groups, their freedom of conscience, the raison d'être for these rights. They weren't made with the powerful in mind, or for rich, smug loudmouths like Ahmad Dhani to abuse.

So in summary: fuck Ahmad Dhani. Let's fix the laws, protect the vulnerable, and hopefully catch more fascists in the process. Properly.
