Which African culture prescribes wearing a jacket as respect?

In Xhosa culture but you would use a blanket or some sort of animal hide over your shoulders before jackets arrived in our country

How correct is that? If we went all the way back, Leopard skin was worn by Royalty only. I’ve never heard of the rest of us having to wear cow or other hide over our shoulders. I stand corrected.

Royalty wore Lion hide but the peasant community was allowed to wear springbok and other animal hide. Who do you think people survived cold winter's. When speaking to ancestors it was custom to put your hide over your shoulders as respect

A boy was always semi naked but a man always carried his spear and his hide over his shoulder everywhere he went. Married women put something over their breasts and a head gear to distinguish them from girls or unmarried women

Head gear sounds a little post modern. It’s like being in row. It’s Jewish culture. I’m taking about black attire we all now swear by. I’d like to know how we signified bereavement before CJR and the rest of his lambs. Before injombi, what was our rite of passage? Also Jewish

I don't know what is injombi but i assume you are talking about ulwaluko or circumcision and that my friend is not a Jewish rite of passage it predates even them. When it comes to bereavement especially wearing black that's a Victorian colonization influence

I’ve been interested in this topic for a while. What I’m finding is a lot of text that sends it straight to Judaism and Muslims. With the “migration” of the Lembe tribe (some call them the lost or 11th Jewish tribe), I’ve often wondered why it was and is important to us.

There was an interesting article on Fridays New York Times @nytimes (02/11) about recent Jewish massacre victims mourning. There’s also a snippet of “White” mourning by Bram Fischer in One of Mandela books. Please check it.

It’s dated into Egypt 2300BCE. Without African scholars to notate and codify it in our various cultures, it makes me ask the questions where? Why? And how? Remember it’s not just an isiXhosa rite of passage. The rest of us a quietly going on about our bussiness.
