So, memtest86 is not packages for most distros and the recommended way of using it is to boot off USB flash drive. For some reason I wanted it in my grub2 menu and spent an hour figuring out how. I succeeded, mostly because of prior work by ArchLinux devs.

As a side effect, I no longer see how grub2 works (its config generated etc.) as black magic, although it still feels a tad over-engineered, esp. compared to lilo, grub v.1, or syslinux.

It feels good to go from "oh no, I have no idea how to deal with this" to "oh yeah, it works like this".

Can you boot FreeDOS from grub/UEFI and then use loadlin to boot memtest+ from autoexec?
-
Apparently not, UEFI only supports 32 bit and 64 bit code, while freedos is 16 bit (and probably won't work without BIOS). Same reason UEFI can't load memtest86+ -- it's 16 bit
