Only posting to say I got my Game Boy Advance SP in the absolute BEST way possible known to man, which is: walking into a Japanese 7-11 and buying the Pearl White bundle with FF Tactics Advance

ICYMI last night, a little breakdown of a Nintendo toy that was sold in the US in the 1970s:

I got the thing! It's the Automatic Surveillance Scope - this is the export version of Gunpei Yokoi's Ultrascope, a vintage Nintendo toy. It's just the Japanese version with a sticker on the front with the US product name.

I'll probably do a tweet thread about this at some point, but I have a LOT of these by now -- while the history of Nintendo toys inside Japan is pretty well documented, these versions for sale outside of Japan are much harder to find and occasionally totally undiscovered

And you can tell the "Automatic Surveillance Scope" sticker originated at Nintendo as well because the typeface is identical to what's used on the main box. Just pointing out that these are legit foreign release variants.

This instruction sheet is formatted identically to the ones included with the US version of "Rifle Roulette," aka one of the Nintendo Beam Gun toys, likely indicating that they both originated at Nintendo and were not printed by the importer.

This one still has the sticker from Reevesline, the NYC-based importer that sold it here. A physical piece of evidence of Nintendo products being available in the US in the 70s.

Yla Eason founded Olmec Corporation after her son confessed that he could never be a hero because of the color of his skin. Olmec went on to revolutionize multicultural toys. The Strong has acquired a press photo of Eason and her son holding Sun-Man after its release in 1986.

My Japanese is nowhere near E-to-J localization quality, but surely one of you out there might want to pitch in and help some legends...

By any chance -- is there a gamer who is following me who speaks Japanese fluently? and wants to help us edit the Japanese text in our game? We're releasing it in Japan and I've gotten feedback that the Japanese translation isn't great.

oh and of course you MUST own the original antique Metroid II game cartridge, because otherwise you're not really playing the game, you're just playing a ROM. also, please do not ask me what is inside the original Metroid II game cartridge

the only REAL way to play Metroid II: Return of Samus: - you must use a brick Game Boy - you must be 9 years old - you must be playing it in the back of your parents' station wagon - you must not have a light - you MUST only play every time your dad drives under a streetlight

Yeah yeah Metroid Prime but also, Metroid II is great on Switch. Put on Color mode and it really doesn't feel like a Game Boy game!

I don't know, I could see DS happening -- obviously they couldn't do the two-screen thing they did with Wii U, but they can do all the other weird solutions. Some games would work better than others, but that's an advantage of the library system vs. a la carte.

Replying to @kobunheat
So, barring any weird surprises (Game Gear etc), this is *probably* the last console to be emulated on Switch Online? GC and beyond get the aforementioned remasters. DS theoretically possible but probably more of a headache to them than it's worth

btw I totally agree that it is very likely that the next thing that happens is they add it to the japan service only and people go nuclear. not me though I would never do that

Quick thoughts: - Anybody who keeps asking for "GameCube on Switch Online" should probably realize by now that's not happening; GameCube games will get HD remasters if anything - Can't believe we had to wait 6 years for GB/GBA but it looks like they're doing it right
