I cannot stress enough how important it is that you not just "support the books", but you support the institutions that carry them. We're all coming under fire.https://www.star-telegram.com/news/politics-government/article255302606.html …

Email or write letters to your public library, library board, your city council, city manager, mayor, etc to voice your support over their collection. Do it NOW, *before* they receive challenges. Show up at council meetings & speak during community forums.

If you have kids in school, write the school librarian, principals, school board, superintendent. Support the library. Show up at any public meetings.

I know it requires more effort, but really, being proactive WILL HELP. Libraries that have proof of community support will have an easier time fighting challenges if that proof comes in BEFORE challenges. "Oh, you want to take out the LGBT+ books? Here are people who want them"

Not only that, please make sure you're both requesting AND checking out these materials. If libraries have solid usage data that proves people not only want the challenged items, but those items ARE BEING USED, it shows the items are necessary & vital to the community.

It all goes together. Data, solid numbers that show people are asking for and using materials, AND any kind of anecdotes about how much you enjoy the library, it's a safe place for you, the collection is inclusive, etc. Libraries desperately need support on both fronts.

100% THIS. the number one thing ppl can do when it comes to any type of advocacy is to be proactive, not just reactive. that way, you’ll have the resources AND the people power when shit hits the fan. it’s not easy! getting ppl involved when there’s not a crisis? shit’s hard
