Instead of pretending a bunch of really old, often racist books are somehow secretly diverse, we decided to celebrate like this.

Rather than rage about publishing's latest bad take at diversity, I'm going to tweet about twists on "classic" tales, written by BIPOC, with BIPOC on the covers from day 1. Starting with the wonderful MORE TO THE STORY by . A twist on Little Women.

They wanted retellings with a diverse cast? I wrote one. Although it’s more of a dismantling of the Peter Pan myth. It features three Latina sisters, some magic, and a whole lot of heart. ON THESE MAGIC SHORES coming out April 21 from !

Today's has reinforced that we must, must, must amplify . Reading "up" is great but too many do it b/c they don't believe there are books that reflect the middle i.e. 12-15 y.o. We've got to fix that.

  20. I needed a reminder from to include picture books in a middle grade presentation. They’re often overlooked and their cleverness under appreciated. This a friendly reminder to think beyond chapter books with older students, and remember the value of picture books. /4

  21. I discussed how this book could be used to discuss gender stereotypes, inherent biases, publishing trends, and challenge assumptions. All important discussions, all valuable to students of ALL ages, just the method of delivery changes by age. /3
