    I guess Gov. Hochul opted for the Christmas Eve message of cowardice, crass political calculation, and/or incompetence. If you can't find more than one person out of the 32,000 to give clemency, you really shouldn't find your way back to the governor's mansion next year.

    BREAKING: NY Gov. announces one sentence commutation. One. Surely, more than one person on this list, and of the 32,000 people in NYS prison custody, merit clemency.

    Critical PSA

    Biannual reminder: Today marks the END of Daylight Saving Time and the START of Standard Time. DST is the GOOD one (the sun stays out later!😃) Standard Time is the BAD one (it gets dark so early😭) We need year-round DST!

    Boosting any number of police officers is a strategy for more police violence. Mayyyybe changing the ratio of female to male would help…. maybe.

    Boosting the number of female police officers across the country isn't just women’s rights issue. It is a strategy for improving public safety outcomes for communities.

    This is good news on multiple levels (two to start): 1. fewer deputies in a corrupt, racist, ineffectively run jurisdiction; 2. the most recalcitrant/least public safety oriented voluntarily leaving.

    A "mass exodus" of L.A. County deputies could be on the way due to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, according to L.A. Sheriff Alex Villanueva. He claims he could lose up to 44% of his workforce, causing an "imminent threat to public safety."

    I wish we didn’t have to keep trotting out studies to show prison is ineffective as well as torture but as we do, Justin sums it up here.

    An important new meta-analysis of studies about the effect of incarceration on reoffending. The bottom line: custodial sentences have either no effect or a modest criminogenic effect on the likelihood of reoffending compared w/noncustodial sentences...

    Invited talk canceled at a private high school.

    Some months ago, a dear friend asked me for a favor. Her former boarding school, Middlesex, wanted me to come speak as part of BHM. Speaking at this type of school is not something I typically do, but she’s my friend. I said yes. I just learned the Pres & board canceled my talk.

    Been a lot of pearl clutching from media and free speechers about a YLS student’s right to use a derogatory term, and meanwhile govts are actually banning an entire concept from schools… and I haven’t seen nearly the same panic … cant put my finger on the issue.

    We have permanently BANNED Critical Race Theory in Alabama. We’re focused on teaching our children how to read and write, not HATE.
